It all started when Charles Rash was four years old, living on his family’s 500-acre property in Mississippi. It was there he first met Big Red, a chestnut horse who became his first companion. His deep connection with horses began in these early days, setting the stage for his lifelong passion.

At age five, Charles moved to Rochester, New York, with his father. Here, he experienced city life, forming friendships and learning about life without racial divides. But the city was a stark contrast to the countryside. This duality gave him an open-minded perspective, but his heart was still drawn back to Mississippi, where he returned in third grade to face a harsh reality: segregation and deep-rooted racism.

At eight, Charles discovered his true passion at a nearby racetrack. It was there he met Mr. Valentine, who introduced him to the world of riding and racing quarter horses. Despite numerous falls and hardships, Charles persevered. By the time he was proficient, he had developed the grit and determination that would guide him for the rest of his life.

At 14, Charles defied the odds, sneaking into professional jockeying before the legal age of 16. His career took off, with his first major victory at Delta Downs. But as he grew, so did his height, forcing him to transition from jockeying to horse conditioning—a pivotal shift that would define the next stage of his career.

As Charles traveled the country—working from New York to Ohio and from Belmont Park to Pimlico—he learned from some of the best trainers in the business. His experience, resilience, and understanding of horses deepened, making him one of the most sought-after trainers in the nation.

In 1983, Charles took his trainer’s test in Michigan, a defining moment in his career. His hard-earned experience over the years led to success, and he began to condition horses that won races across the country. His love for horses, combined with his dedication and skill, transformed him into the professional he is today.

Now, after decades in the racing world, Charles Rash continues to build on the foundation laid during his childhood in Mississippi. From a young boy riding Big Red to a renowned trainer, his journey is a testament to passion, perseverance, and an unwavering love for horses. His legacy is one of grit, determination, and the beauty of never giving up on what you love.
